President’s Letter: Fall in Louisiana

Hello LaTESOL,

Fall in Louisiana—that delightful time of year when temperatures fall from the 90s to the 80s and our classrooms are humming again with the sounds of beautiful language floating through the air. I hope you all have had a great start to the school year. There may be an economic downturn, but education stops for no one, and the teaching we are giving our students will benefit them for a lifetime.

LaTESOL also wants to benefit you, the faithful teachers who diligently prepare lessons and unselfishly give of yourselves day after day to our culturally and racially diverse students. To that end, we hope you will join us for LaTESOL 2009 at the Cajundome Convention Center in Lafayette. We have a great program planned for you, highlighted by Mr. Louis Mangione, a dynamic speaker for K-12 education. In addition, we have a number of other presenters who can’t wait to share their expertise and experience with you.

We also are seeking to fill some vacancies on our LaTESOL board. If you or someone else you know is interested and available to help serve in this important capacity, please contact me or one of the other current board members. Elections will be held during our business meeting at the end of the conference. We especially would like to have more board representation from the New Orleans area, and I would like to strongly encourage teachers from NO to apply for board membership.

Please come this November 13 and enjoy a rollicking good day of enrichment and camaraderie. It’s where all the fashionable ESOL teachers will be!

Position Statement on Independent Short-Term TESL/TEFL Certificate Programs
A short-term TESL/TEFL certificate program typically is a full-time intensive program or a series of part-time online courses running 4–6 weeks or longer. Although accredited post-secondary institutions may offer credit-bearing TESL/TEFL certificate programs, independent TESL/TEFL certificate programs are typically neither accredited nor affiliated with an accredited postsecondary institution.

Position Statement on the Rights of Deaf Learners to Acquire Full Proficiency in a Native Signed Language
TESOL supports multilingualism and the right to advanced literacy in both native and second languages. In the case of Deaf students, TESOL recognizes and supports Deaf learners’ right to become proficient in a signed language or written or spoken language(s), including English. For learners who are hearing impaired, the learning of signed language and the promotion of the Deaf community’s linguistic identity are fundamental to engagement in the second language acquisition process and their need to participate fully in the Deaf community.
